Ontario First Aid Training Requirements

Under Regulation 1101 of Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act, employers are required to ensure adequate first aid provisions for the safety of their workforce. These regulations specify the required first aid facilities and trained personnel based on the size of the workplace. Below is a summary of these requirements:

1 to 5 Employees:

• 🏥 First Aid Personnel: A worker with a valid Emergency First Aid certificate must oversee the first aid station at all times.
• ⛑️ First Aid Kit: A fully stocked Ontario Section 8 First Aid Kit must be accessible and meet the regulatory standards.

6 to 15 Employees:

• 🧑‍⚕️ First Aid Personnel: A trained employee with a Standard First Aid certificate is required to manage the first aid station.
• 🛠️ First Aid Kit: The station must be equipped with an Ontario Section 9 First Aid Kit, containing the specific supplies outlined by regulation.

16 to 200 Employees:

• 🧑‍⚕️ First Aid Personnel: A trained employee with a Standard First Aid certificate must be available to manage the first aid station.
• 🛠️ First Aid Kit: The station must be equipped with an Ontario Section 10 First Aid Kit, containing the necessary supplies as per regulation.
• 🛏️ Additional Equipment: A stretcher and two blankets must be available on-site for use in emergencies.

More than 200 Employees:

• 🏥 First Aid Room: Employers must provide a dedicated first aid room in addition to the required Ontario Section 10 First Aid Kit.
• 🧑‍⚕️ Staffing: The room must be staffed by a registered nurse or a worker holding a Standard First Aid certificate. This staff member must not have other duties that could compromise their ability to provide first aid.
